The Shumway Fire Protection District is committed to provide dependable service in a professional manner while showing compassion for those in need. We will protect lives, property, and the environment through fire suppression, emergency services, rescue, fire prevention, and public education.

The Shumway Fire Protection District is a progressive service oriented organization that provides innovative and effective leadership through our ongoing education and training.

The Shumway Fire Protection District is a volunteer department located in Central Illinois. We cover approximately 70 square miles with a fluctuating population that peaks around 5,000. Our densest population area is Lake Sara, which is Effingham County's largest tourist location. Lake Sara is an 8-- acre man-made lake with 30 miles of shoreline.

The Shumway Fire Protection District is composed of 5 command officers and 25 highly dedicated firefighters. Apparatus resources include 3 engines, 1 brush truck, 1 UTV outfitted for medical and wild land emergencies, 2 tenders, and 2 utility vehicles. The department responds to a variety of emergencies that include residential , commercial, farm, and wild land fires. We also respond to vehicle accidents, hazardous material incidents, water rescue, and natural disasters.

The Shumway Fire Protection District has currently been assessed a 5/5Y by the Insurance Service Office (ISO). A rating schedule was developed by ISO to serve as a means for insurance companies to help calculate risk and rates of property and casualty benefits for their clients. The overall rating is a result of the joint efforts of the Effingham County Sheriff's Department Dispatch Center, local water services (EJ Water, Lake Sara Water Cooperative), and the Fire Department.
